End of an Era: Casino St. Moritz Closes Its Doors

Casino St. Moritz, Switzerland’s highest-altitude casino and a landmark in the luxury resort town, has officially ceased operations. Located 1,850 meters above sea level, the casino was once a premier destination offering table games and 65 slot machines, including the Swiss Jackpot, Eagle Jackpot, and Alpine Jackpot.

The closure follows the withdrawal of its majority shareholder, Casinos Austria International. Citing economic concerns, the company chose not to inject further capital into the venture. As a result, the Swiss Federal Gaming Board (SFGB) determined that the casino no longer met the legal financial requirements necessary to retain its gaming licence and withdrew it.

In a statement, the Federal Gaming Commission (FGC) confirmed the closure, noting that the concession could not be upheld without sufficient financial backing throughout its term. While the casino will be granted a hearing, operations have already ceased.

The FGC is now evaluating future casino operations in the southern Grisons region and is expected to present recommendations to the Federal Council.

This development also echoes broader concerns voiced earlier by Casinos Austria’s General Director, Erwin van Lambaart, who warned that proposed tax changes in Austria could jeopardize several smaller casinos, both domestically and internationally.
